1.What is Giving Diapers, Giving Hope?

We are a national cloth diaper lending service for income-qualified families that started in 2011. GDGH is recognized as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS and is run completely on donations and volunteers. We accept donations of cloth diapers and diapering accessories, as well as monetary donations, which we use to assist with shipping fees, buy diapers as needed, and cover operating costs. We are NOT a diaper service. We lend the diapers to the parents/guardians and they are responsible to do the washing themselves.

2.What if I don’t know how to cloth diaper?

Cloth diapering can seem overwhelming at first but once you get into your routine it is simple! We suggest looking at the resources linked for basic cloth diaper information: Change-Diapers.com Intro to Cloth, Dirty Diaper Laundry’s Cloth 101, and The Eco-Friendly Family’s Cloth Resources. We are also happy to answer specific questions by email.

3. Why is there a shipping fee?

GDGH charges a shipping fee for three reasons- the first being that we simply don’t have the funds to cover the cost of shipping for the hundreds of families approved every year.  Second – we believe if there is value attached to the diapers families will be more likely to use them and care for them as if they were their own. Even if our finances were sufficient to fund shipping costs 100% we would always charge a small fee and instead use that money to buy more diapers. GDGH makes no money on shipping fees – all that families pay goes to shipping costs and any remaining shipping expense is paid with donations.

4. Is there a time limit on how long I can keep the loaner diapers?

No. Simply put, we believe every family is different and their needs cannot be met if we limit their time with our diapers. Some families may find they only need to keep our diapers for 1-4 months while they build up their own stash of cloth diapers. Others may be having more serious financial struggles and need the money savings our diapers provide to keep their lights on and food on the table. We trust that our families will send the diapers back when they are no longer needed but in a timely manner.

5. What types of diapers are shipped?

GDGH relies on donations therefore the styles of diapers sent will vary family to family. We do our best to send what we expect will work best for your baby’s size and your family’s needs. We loan both new and used diapers and inspect them before shipping back out, though we are humans and sometimes damaged diapers are sent. If a diaper you receive is not in usable condition we ask that you contact us, we are happy to help.

6. Can I request certain styles or brands of diapers?

With the exception of allergies or parental disabilities we are not able to honor style requests. If you child is allergic or sensitive to certain fabrics please note this on your application. We cannot honor brands requests.

7. Do you also send accessories like wet bags or wipes?

If we have the items in our stock from donations we will send a wetbag or a small set of wipes with your diapers. We can only guarantee cloth diapers however. If we send prefolds we try to send pins or Snappi closures but can’t guarantee them. It is our hope that you can acquire those items in time on your own.

8.How long does it take for applications to be approved/diapers to ship?

We like to say that applications will take 2-3 weeks to be approved (most will find this happens far faster, usually within days, but during busy times of the year it could take longer). After approved and your shipping fee is paid we estimate the diapers to ship within 2-3 weeks. (again, this will probably happen sooner but when times are busy they may take that amount of time.)

9. Will I need to strip or bleach my diapers when they arrive?

We recommend a good washing before using any of your diapers if they are used. You can add ¼ cup of bleach to sanitize the diapers to your hot wash cycle along with a cloth diaper safe detergent. If your diapers are brand new you will need to “prep” them first. Please see prepping instructions linked here: How to Prep Cloth Diapers.

10.How do I care for my diapers?

To care for your diapers please read our Washing Instructions. In general, line drying is recommended to extend the life of the diapers, and we suggest you lay diapers in the sun to remove stains and sanitize them periodically.

13. What if I need larger diapers later on??

14. How do I ship the diapers back when I’m done with them?

When you first get your diapers we ask that you make a note of what we shipped. Due to our busy shipping schedule we cannot take the time to specially mark each diaper mailed out. You are welcome to mark on the tags a special dot, heart, or “GDGH” with a permanent marker or make a list, photograph them, etc. When you are done with your diapers look for the archived email abour return shipping.  This email contains instructions on how to return your diapers.  If you cannot find it send us an email givingdiapersgivinghope@gmail.com.

15.Is there a way I can volunteer or assist?

As much as we appreciate those who want to volunteer for GDGH our unique set-up makes this difficult. Our 2 person administrative team works from their homes and shipping is done by our shipping partners. We have opportunities for people to distribute GDGH pamphlets at local agencies and WIC offices or just your word of mouth is always appreciated when you see someone in need of assistance.
